A coaching centre director in Andhra Pradesh’s Vizianagaram has been accused of sexually harassing several young women who had enrolled at his institute to prepare for government teacher recruitment exams. The allegations surfaced after one of the students attempted suicide on Wednesday, reportedly unable to cope with the harassment. She survived after her friends intervened in time.
The incident has triggered outrage in the town and raised concerns about the safety of women attending private coaching institutes.
According to the students, the accused, identified as Saripalli Srinivasa Rao, runs a training institute called Vinex Coaching Centre in Vizianagaram. The institute offers coaching for competitive exams such as the Teacher Eligibility Test (TET), District Selection Committee (DSC), and Secondary Grade Teacher (SGT) recruitment exams, which attract thousands of aspirants every year in Andhra Pradesh.
Students alleged that Srinivasa Rao enrolled nearly 70 young women from different areas, charging each of them around Rs 50,000 in fees. The coaching sessions reportedly ran from 9 am to 7.30 pm daily.
However, several students have now accused the director of sexually harassing them under the pretext of academic guidance.
According to the victims, Srinivasa Rao would allegedly call female students individually to his chamber after coaching hours and behave inappropriately. They claimed he would summon them when no one else was around and engage in inappropriate touching, obscene remarks, and intimidation.
One of the students alleged that the harassment escalated recently when the director pressured her to meet his demands. When she refused, he allegedly pushed her against a wall and assaulted her, causing injuries. She further claimed that he repeatedly called her afterward, asking her to return and warning her not to inform her family members or other students.
Unable to cope with the harassment and threats, the student reportedly attempted suicide on Wednesday. Her friends intervened and prevented the attempt, averting a tragedy.
Other Students Speak Out
Following the incident, several other young women studying at the institute came forward with similar allegations.
Some students claimed the director tried to lure them by promising higher scores in mock tests and better preparation for competitive exams in exchange for complying with his demands.
On Wednesday night, several students approached the police and filed a formal complaint.
Police officials confirmed that a case has been registered based on the victims’ complaint. DSP Govind Rao and CI Narasimha Murthy said an investigation has been launched into the allegations.
However, the accused coaching centre director is reportedly absconding after the allegations came to light, and police have launched a search operation to locate him.
The incident has sparked widespread debate in Vizianagaram, with many raising concerns about the safety of young women attending private coaching centres, which have become a major industry across India as students prepare for competitive government exams.
