The serene surroundings of Pallikkathaayam wetlands at Cherumukku near Tirurangadi were abuzz with excitement on Sunday (June 29, 2025) afternoon as angling enthusiasts gathered for a State-level competition and celebrated the joy of fishing and reconnecting with nature.

Around 50 anglers from Malappuram and neighbouring districts took part in the competition in an attempt to revive a timeless pastime while introducing the thrill of sport fishing to the youth.

Cherumukku witnessed a festive ambience as a large crowd turned out to watch the third edition of the annual angling competition. Many youngsters watched in curiosity as the anglers displayed their fishing skills.

“We have been organising this competition for three years under the banner of the Cherumukku people’s collective. It aimed to draw the younger generation away from their screens and reintroduce them to the thrill of fishing, a sport that offers a refreshing break from mobile phones, gaming, and social media,” said Mustafa Cherumukku, secretary of the collective.

Each team consisted of five members. They were spaced 1.5 meters apart with 10 minutes to catch fish. If no catch was made, they got an extra five minutes. The competition progressed through initial rounds, pre-quarters, quarters, semis and a thrilling final round.

Shihab V.K. Padi lifted the championship when Muneer Chonari Munniyur became the runner up and Jafar V.K. Padi won the third prize. They were given trophies and cash prizes.

K.K. Biju, sub-inspector at Tirurangadi police station, gave away the prizes. E.P. Saidalavi, president of the collective, presided over the function. Mr. Mustafa welcomed the gathering and P. Nishad proposed a vote of thanks.
