1978 film ‘Magic’ to get a remake

As per The Hollywood Reporter, there are talks ongoing about remaking a modern-day version of the 1978 film ‘Magic’, which originally starred Anthony Hopkins as a crazed ventriloquist. Sam Raimi and Roy Lee, names behind the ‘Evil Dead’ franchise, as well as the recent horror hit ‘Weapons’, are going to back the new project. Mark Swift and Damian Shannon, well-known scriptwriters, will be taking over the story formation.

The two have already previously worked on popular horror projects such as ‘Friday the 13th’ and Freddy vs Jason’.

About the original ‘Magic’ film

The original film starred names like Anthony Hopkins, Ann-Margret, Burgess Meredith, Ed Lauter, E. J. André, Jerry Houser, David Ogden Stiers, and Lillian Randolph. It followed the story of Corky, whose attempt at becoming a magician fails. Afterwards, however, his attempt at a comeback as a ventriloquist ends up in success with his dummy, Fats.

After getting nervous about starring on a TV show, he ends up going back home and meeting his first love. Meanwhile, Fats seems to be growing a consciousness of his own, and does not look forward to the entry of new love in Corky’s life.

The film was directed by Richard Attenborough, who’s known for some of his other projects such as ‘Jurassic Park’, ‘Miracle on 34th Street’, and ‘The Great Escape’. The script was written and created by William Goldman, with the base of the story being inspired by his novel.
