The country’s first implantation of the Edwards SAPIEN 3 Ultra RESILIA transcatheter aortic valve (TAVI) was performed at Apollo Hospitals, Chennai, a release from the hospital said.
This valve is reportedly designed to last longer. It reduces the need for repeat procedures, transforming outcomes for patients suffering from severe aortic stenosis, the release added.
The procedure was performed by G. Sengottuvelu, senior interventional cardiologist, Apollo Hospitals, Chennai.
The 70-year-old patient had a severe calcific tricuspid aortic stenosis and already had a stent implanted. He was considered high-risk for open-heart surgery.
The new technology enabled doctors to provide a safe, minimally invasive, and durable solution. Dr. Sengottuvelu said, “This procedure marks a new chapter in cardiac care in India. The new valve is built to resist calcification and extend durability, which means our patients can expect safer outcomes and a longer life for their replacement valve.”
Preetha Reddy, Executive Vice Chairperson, Apollo Hospitals Group, said: “The introduction of the SAPIEN 3 Ultra RESILIA valve is a significant milestone as it offers patients access to a minimally invasive solution with proven durability.”
