Chelsea winger Pedro Neto has apologised after pushing over a ball boy during his side’s chaotic 5–2 defeat to Paris Saint‑Germain in the UEFA Champions League.

The flashpoint occurred deep into stoppage time of the last-16 first leg at the Parc des Princes on Wednesday night, as tensions boiled over during the closing moments of Chelsea’s late collapse.

With the visitors chasing the game, Neto attempted to quickly retrieve the ball from a ball boy near the touchline.

In the process, the 26-year-old pushed the youngster, causing him to fall onto a nearby chair — a moment that immediately sparked a heated confrontation between players from both teams.

Speaking to TNT Sports after the match, Neto was quick to express regret.

“I want to apologise to the ball boy. I have already spoken to him," Neto said.

“We were losing and in the emotion of the game I wanted to get the ball fast and I gave him a little push.

“I’m not like this. It was in the heat of the moment and I want to apologise. I gave him my shirt. I’m really sorry about it – I feel I have to apologise to him."

The Portuguese winger added that he had apologised repeatedly after the incident.

“My French is not very good, and [Portugal team-mate] Vitinha came over and said to him I was not like this," Neto explained.

“At the end he laughed and I gave him my shirt and said sorry about 35 times. He could see what had happened and was happy with the situation."

Chelsea head coach Liam Rosenior also issued an apology on behalf of the club.

“If there was anything from our side that was wrong or out of order, I apologise on behalf of the club," he said.
