New Delhi: Recently, Apple made the announcement that they have begun to rework their Mac chip roadmap with a focus on using AI, specifically by developing the next-generation M-series to add improved AI capabilities instead of continuing to release chips in their traditional fashion. Many of the AI technologies in all the products were part of Apple’s abandoned self-driving car venture. The Neural Engine eventually became a part of Apple’s product lineup as well. All Macs from the very first since the launch of M1 have acquired AI processing skill, with a Neural Engine comprising their grain. Since the M1’s release in 2020, all Macs have had AI support on board with a Neural Engine as the chip’s grain.

It also had an impact on Ultra-class Mac chips, Apple Intelligence server chips, and Apple’s on-device AI strategy. Since then, Apple has been stepping up its development of the Neural Engine, with major improvements that feature in the M4’s update. Apple has encountered challenges in Siri and Apple Intelligence, and the report suggested that it is gaining greater significance for Apple, as more AI workloads shift to the devices. Apple’s upcoming Mac generation is starting with the unheard-of M6 basic chip later this year.

Apple isn’t reporting the normal naming system for M6 Pro, M6 Max, and M6 Ultra variants, but is claiming they are going straight to the M7 chips. Surprising though its expected roadmap will be:

  • M6 (This year)
  • M7 (first half of 2027)
  • M7 Pro (late 2027)
  • M7 Max (late 2027)
  • M7 Ultra (2028)

The finalized M7 design was just six months after the beginning of work on the M6. However, Apple has skipped Ultra chips before; the report stated that skipping an entire generation of Pro, Max, and Ultra chips would be the first. Apple has pressed forward with the M7 series to deliver some significant AI enhancements earlier. It is believed M7 Ultra will significantly boost AI capabilities. Start to understand the features of specialized AI chips like Nvidia’s Blackwell. Will be the foundation of the successor to the current AI server, set to be available in approximately 2029. According to reports, Apple is developing a more sophisticated AI server codenamed J246, which would run on its M5 Ultra processor.

M7 Ultra will also be particularly engineered to enable up to 1.5 TB of memory, about double that of the M5 Ultra. Final configuration may vary with respect to memory available due to the industry’s shortage, which is affecting both supply and capacity.
