Apple has reportedly announced a major update to Apple Music. According to a report by 9to5Mac, Apple has introduced a new metadata tags that will enable record labels and distributors to disclose when artificial intelligence has been used in the creation of music, artwork, or videos.
As per the report, Apple sent an email to Apple Music partners highlighting that these AI Transparency Tags will be needed for all new content delivered to the platform moving forward.
Four types of AI tags
The 9to5Mac report suggests that the new system consists of four distinct tags, each corresponding to creative element:
- Artwork: Indicates AI-generated album covers or motion graphics.
- Track: Marks when AI was used in producing a sound recording.
- Composition: Discloses AI involvement in lyrics or musical composition.
- Music Video: Flags AI-generated visual elements in videos.
Apple clarified that multiple tags can be applied to the same content if AI was used across different areas.Apple says the move is a first step toward greater transparency in the music industry as generative AI becomes more common.
Interestingly, the company is leaving it up to partners to decide what qualifies as AI-generated content, similar to how they already manage metadata like genres and credits. The new requirements are effective immediately for all new submissions to Apple Music. The company has also updated its Apple Music Package Specification to reflect the changes. Apple Music subscriptions remain available at $10.99 per month, with a one-month free trial.
