New Delhi: Apple has reportedly been experimenting with DRAM chips from the Chinese memory manufacturer ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT). It marks a step beyond the earlier reports that Apple was merely seeking permission to source memory from the company.

Apple has recently reported to have started qualification testing. The testing is believed to be aimed at Apple devices sold in China, instead of worldwide products. Qualification experimenting is a standard process to verify reliability, compatibility, and performance before any supplier is approved. It does not guarantee CXMT will become an Apple supplier.

Global DRAM shortages fueled by explosive AI server demand. Rising memory prices have increased Apple’s hardware costs. Apple wanted to diversify beyond the three dominant DRAM makers: Samsung Electronics, SK hynix and Micron Technology. I believe adding another supplier could strengthen Apple’s negotiating position and reduce the dependence on the existing memory giants.

Apple has been lobbying the US government for approval to purchase memory chips from CXMT, which has appeared on the Pentagon’s list of companies alleged to have ties to the Chinese military.

The designation does not automatically prohibit commercial purchases; it creates significant political and reputational challenges. Reports also suggested that Apple expected to use CXMT memory only in the devices manufactured and sold within China.
