Tua Tagovailoa trade rumor (Getty Images)
Tua Tagovailoa's contract questions are no longer quiet whispers inside league circles. They are now out in the open, and the Miami Dolphins are not pretending otherwise. After months of uneven play and growing frustration, the franchise is openly weighing its options.
That alone says plenty. Quarterbacks tied to long deals are rarely discussed this way unless something has shifted behind closed doors. What makes this moment different is the timing and the honesty. General manager Jon-Eric Sullivan did not dodge the issue when asked at the NFL Combine. His message was direct, even if the outcome remains uncertain. The organization is thinking hard about its future, and its former centerpiece is now part of a larger calculation.
Tua Tagovailoa era in Miami under threat as front office comments ignite shocking exit buzz
The clearest sign of Miami’s thinking came through a report shared by insider Cameron Wolfe. Jon-Eric Sullivan admitted, “Everything is on (the) table, including (the) possibility of a trade,” a statement that immediately shifted the conversation from speculation to possibility.
That kind of public admission matters. Teams do not casually float trade ideas about starting quarterbacks. When they do, it often means internal discussions have been ongoing for some time.
Miami has not made a final decision, but it has reached the point where keeping every option open feels necessary. The financial side complicates everything. According to Spotrac, Tua Tagovailoa remains under contract through 2028 as part of his $212.4 million deal. An immediate release makes little sense financially. The structure of the contract means Miami would benefit more from waiting, with a potential escape window in 2027.
Until then, his cap hit remains significant. That leaves a trade as the cleanest solution, at least on paper. Moving him would shift much of the financial responsibility to another team. But paper and reality are different things.Performance has made the situation harder. Tagovailoa’s 2025 season raised real concerns. He finished with one of the league’s highest interception totals, trailing only Geno Smith, who had 17.
Turnovers change how teams evaluate quarterbacks. They change how teammates trust them. They change everything.Still, talent always attracts interest. Quarterback demand across the National Football League rarely fades. It only takes one team to believe a reset could help him rediscover his rhythm. For now, Miami is standing at a crossroads. The contract, the performance, and the timing have all collided. What once felt secure now feels uncertain, and the next move could reshape more than just one roster spot.
