The Indian Army, in coordination with the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Jammu and Kashmir Police, and local administration, has successfully concluded a high-altitude rescue operation after a technical snag disrupted the Gulmarg Gondola cable car service in on Monday.
Police confirmed that rescue operations have now been fully concluded, with all stranded tourists safely evacuated from the cable car.
The Gulmarg Gondola service was temporarily suspended today due to a technical snag, leaving hundreds of tourists stranded at the base and mid-stations. Around 300 tourists were stuck across 65 cabins at different heights for several hours before being brought down. No casualties were reported.
Some cabins were reportedly suspended at heights of up to 500 feet, making evacuation slow and technically challenging. Teams used harness-based rope techniques to carefully lower passengers one by one to safety.
Visuals from the site showed coordinated rescue efforts in difficult weather conditions, with personnel braving rain and wind to reach stranded tourists. In several clips shared online, tourists could be seen being secured with safety harnesses and gradually lowered from cable car cabins to the ground.
According to officials, 179 tourists were evacuated in the first five hours alone, while the remaining passengers were rescued later despite heavy rain hampering operations.
