Arsenal FC on Wednesday (October 29) night became the first-ever English top-flight team to win six matches in a calendar month without conceding any goals. The Gunners capped a brilliant, momentum-building October with a 2-0 win over Brighton & Hove Albion at the Emirates Stadium in the League Cup.

They started the month with a 2-0 win over Greek club Olympiacos in the UEFA Champions League and followed it up with 2-0 and 0-1 triumphs over West Ham United and Fulham in the Premier League. Atletico Madrid were thrashed 4-0 last week in the Champions League before Mikel Arteta’s men secured a professional 1-0 win against Brighton’s bitter rivals, Crystal Palace, at home in the league.

Ethan Nwaneri and Bukayo Saka scored in the second half to seal the victory against the Seagulls. The League Cup quarterfinal draw, after the matches concluded, pitted Arsenal against Palace again in December, once again in North London.

Although Brighton has struggled in the league all season, the win would be particularly pleasing to Arsenal, considering Arteta made 10 changes to the starting 11 from the Palace match. Teenagers Max Dowman and Andre Harriman-Annous made their first starts, while several others, including the new recruit defensive pairing of Christhian Mosquera and Piero Hincapie, started together for the first time.

“A beautiful evening for many reasons," Arteta said. “We are in the quarterfinals of the competition. We changed a lot of players today. We played players I had never played before together against a very strong Premier League team. We had two debuts as a starter with Max and with Andre as well – I think everybody feels very, very proud of what they’ve done, the way they have responded to this huge challenge at their age and the fact that we won the game."

Arsenal were jittery at the start of the match and looked closer than ever to lose the clean-sheet record, but grew into the game defensively to add another shut-down to their hat.

“They’d (Mosquera and Hincapie) never played together, so to build that chemistry, it takes time. I think they’ve done really, really well today. Again, for Piero especially, he hasn’t played that many minutes to have his first start with the club. Again, a lot of positives to take, some very big learnings as well that we have to be very cautious of. But overall, a great night."
