Arshad Warsi and Maria Goretti’s love story is straight out of a movie. After dating for eight years, the two got married in 1999. Their interfaith marriage (Arshad being Muslim and Maria Christian) has now lasted over 25 years.
In a recent podcast, Arshad has opened up about how it all began and how their love has remained strong for so many years. He recalled first seeing Maria during a dance competition. “We were very weird. She is a full-on, hardcore, good girl types. She goes to the church every morning, she was a good kid. I liked her because she was a good dancer, very pretty. There was a college competition and I was called to judge, I was a choreographer back then.
A friend of mine told me that there’s a girl in St. Andrews, she has a very cute smile,” he shared during a chat with Raj Shamani.
Arshad said he immediately noticed her. “When that college’s turn came in the competition, I was trying to spot who has a good smile amongst them. I spotted her and felt that she was a pretty girl and a good dancer. I told her that I do plays and if you feel like doing it, it would be lovely to have you. But, she said no.”
Maria, however, later came to watch one of his plays and eventually joined as a background dancer. “When I was doing a play in Bandra, she visited, saw us performing, and loved. So, she joined us and everything started from there. She fell in love with me, I didn’t. She never told me but her body language said so. All my friends also used to say that she likes me. When I asked her, she denied on my face,” he revealed. The turning point came during a show in Dubai. “Then, we had a show in Dubai once and I made this good Catholic girl drink beer.
Within half a bottle, all her feelings came out. Then, we started going out and we organically got married. When I look at her, she is absolutely good, beautiful, her morals, nature, taking care of her parents, everything was nice about her. Everything you want in a girl, she had it. Only thing was that she is crazy!” he laughed.Earlier, in an interview with IANS, Arshad had spoken about religion. He had said, "I'm not religious.
I don't believe in rituals. However, I'm not an atheist. I believe in god. I believe that there is a power and I believe that all the religions are just different roads of reaching that one power. But those roads are made by people that I don't like." He had also shared, "I go everywhere, I celebrate everything. My kids if you see, you'll see them more as Christians as they go to church very often. I have no problems with that." He also opened up on his idea of love during this recent podcast and he said, "Love is unreliable. What you need is respect. It keeps changing. You love your parents, you love your girlfriend who then becomes your wife, you love your kids. But respect doesn't change, respect is more important than love. I also feel lust has more value than lust. A husband, wife should be in lust with each other always, that never goes. Love can also be between a mother and son.
Between a husband and wife, I feel lust is more important than love. You should lust for each other, that will keep your relationship alive forever." On the work front, Arshad Warsi was last seen in ‘Bhagwat – Chapter 1: Raakshas’, which released on October 17. He also appeared in Aryan Khan’s directorial debut series ‘The Ba**ds of Bollywood’, where his character Ghafoor has become a fan favourite.
