As monsoon invigorated, Goa gets copious rainfall

Panaji: With an invigorated monsoon triggering heavy to very heavy precipitation, Goa came under the grip of copious rainfall, especially on Saturday evening. The rainfall deficit is likely to be wiped off on the weekend.In 11 days of the current month, the slowdown in monsoon activity had yielded only 99.2m of rainfall, as the deficit soared to 53.8% on Wednesday.But the rejuvenation of the monsoon current helped to add 197.3mm in just three days, as the state recorded heavy to very heavy rainfall in spells.On Saturday, the seasonal total touched 297.6mm while at this stage the normal value should be 326.2mm.The deficit has been reduced to just 9.1% from 16% on Friday, as the IMD, Panaji, recorded a daily average of 57.2mm of rainfall over the past 24 hours till Saturday morning.Pernem recorded the highest of 145.8mm, Mapusa 89.2mm, Panaji 67.8mm, Sanquelim 64.4mm, Dharbandora 60mm, Sanguem 42.1mm, Ponda 40.8mm, and Dabolim 37.8mm over 24 hours till Saturday morning.The rainfall of 100.8mm recorded in a 24-hour spell till Friday morning was the highest this June.On Saturday evening, the IMD, Panaji, updated the weather alert to red for South Goa and orange for North Goa for the weekend.For Sunday, an orange alert has been issued for both districts while it is yellow for the two subsequent days.
