With the relentless rainfall that has battered the region since las week showing no signs of easing, the spectre of flooding loomed large over Pathanamthitta on Sunday (August 17, 2025).
Water levels in all reservoirs across the district have risen sharply in recent days, prompting authorities to open the shutters of the Kakki-Anathodu reservoir and the Moozhiyar dam. The release from the Kakki dam has, in turn, caused the Pampa river to swell, leading officials to impose a blanket ban on Sabarimala pilgrims entering the river.
Waterlogging risk
The heavy downpour has also heightened the risk of waterlogging in low-lying areas, local flooding and landslides. With rains intensifying in hilly and forest regions, the chances of flash floods, mudslides and landslips have increased. The District Collector has urged residents in vulnerable areas to remain on high alert.
As of Sunday evening, the water level at the Kakki reservoir stood at 976.60 m, with two shutters kept open by 45 cm each. The Moozhiyar dam too recorded a surge in inflow, despite the shutters being opened during the day, with the water level reaching 191.85 m.
Even as torrential rains continued to lash the Sabarimala forests, the hill shrine witnessed a steady stream of devotees throughout the day. The temple will remain open until August 21.
