Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw urged digital platforms at the DNPA Conclave 2026 to revise revenue-sharing models, emphasizing their responsibility for hosted content and online safety. He highlighted the significant threat posed by AI-generated misinformation, which erodes societal trust. The minister warned that if voluntary changes aren't made, legal avenues will be explored.
At the recent Digital News Publishers Association (DNPA) Conclave 2026, Union Minister for Electronics and IT Ashwini Vaishnaw addressed pressing concerns around social media revenue models, online safety, and the growing risks posed by AI-generated content.

Speaking at the conclave, Ashwini Vaishnaw urged digital platforms to revisit their revenue-sharing frameworks. Hee said, "I will request all the platforms to rethink their revenue-sharing policies because that is also one of the major concerns that the entire society today is raising. If this is not done voluntarily, then there are so many countries which have shown the path to get it done in a legal way."

The minister also shared that platforms cannot distance themselves from the content hosted on their networks.
"Platforms must take responsibility for the content that is hosted by them. The online safety of children, the online safety of all citizens is the responsibility of the platforms," he said.

“Creating synthetically generated photos and videos which have absolutely no relation with reality. And all that content when it reaches the common citizen. They start questioning the very basic structure of the society. And this is a big threat that every country including India is juggling with these issues now,” he added.
