Holders Korea crushed Chinese Taipei 7-0 on Friday in their Asia Cup Hockey in Bihar, after Malaysia rallied from a goal down to thrash Bangladesh 4-1 in Rajgir, Bihar.
Malaysia scored three field goals through Ashran Hamsani (25th minute), Akhimullah Anuar (36th), Muhajir Abdul Rauf (48th) before Syed Cholan (54th) struck from a penalty corner.
In the second match of Pool B, Dain Son (17th, 29th, and 58th minute) netted a hat-trick, Jihun Yang (27th, 50th) scored twice from penalty corners, and Seyong Oh (53rd) added another from field effort.
Korea further extended their lead with two more goals from Yoonho Kong (54th) and Son in the final minutes, securing a commanding victory.
Despite being ranked 29th, Bangladesh initially took the lead in the 16th minute when Ashraful Islam converted a penalty corner.
Shocked by the early goal, Malaysia intensified their offense in search of an equalizer, which came five minutes before halftime through Hamsani’s fine field strike.
Although Malaysia had a slow start, they maintained their dominance by scoring three more goals in the final quarter—two from field play and one from a set piece—to achieve a comfortable win.
Malaysia capitalized on just one of the four penalty corners they earned, while Bangladesh secured two and scored from one.
Malaysia will face title holders and five-time champions South Korea on Saturday, while Bangladesh will play against Chinese Taipei earlier in the day.
In Pool A matches on Friday, Japan will compete against Kazakhstan, and India will conclude the day’s fixtures against China.
The Asia Cup serves as a direct qualification tournament for next year’s FIH World Cup, to be co-hosted by Belgium and the Netherlands from August 14 to 30.
