The BJP-led NDA alliance won the Assam Legislative Assembly elections, with the results being declared on May 4, 20266. The NDA won a total of 102 out of 126 seats and achieved a third consecutive term. The Bharatiya Janata Party independently won 82 seats, crossing the majority mark on its own.

Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma was sworn in by Governor Lakhman Prasad Acharya as the Chief Minister of Assam on May 12, 2026 for his second consecutive term. 

Four other cabinet ministers were also sworn in with Dr Sarma.

Himanta Biswa Sarma

Mr. Sarma is the first non-Congress leader in Assam to be sworn in as the Chief Minister for a second consecutive term. He secured his sixth consecutive win from the Jalukbari constituency with 74.2% of the vote. Mr Sarma is often credited with spearheading the BJP’s hold in the North-Eastern hill states of India. He was a part of the Indian National Congress from 1991 until his resignation in 2015. 

Atul Bora

Mr Bora is the President of the Asom Gana Parishad(AGP), a key ally of the BJP-led NDA coalition. In the Assembly election, he retained his seat in Bokakhat by a margin of 60,500 votes. 

His portfolio includes Panchayat and Rural Development, Implementation of the Assam Accord, Border Protection and Development and Excise. 

Ajanta Neog

Ms Neog held on to her Golaghat constituency seat in the polls and has served as the Finance Minister of Assam in the previous cabinet.  She has won her constituency four times since 2001 and served as a state minister. In 2020, she transitioned from the Indian National Congress to the BJP. 

Her portfolio includes Women and Child Development and Tourism. 

Charan Boro

Mr Boro won the Mazbat constituency seat in the polls and belongs to the Bodoland People’s Front(BPF). He has been given the charge for the Welfare of Bodoland and Transport. 

The actor-turned-politician’s Mazbat win was his third consecutive state assembly victory since 2016. 

Rameswar Teli

Mr Teli won the Duliajan constituency as a BJP candidate and has been given charge of Transport and Development, Labour Welfare, and Tea Tribes and Adivasi Welfare. 

Ashwini Ray Sarkar

Mr Sarkar has been given the charge of the departments of Social Justice & Empowerment, Soil Conservation, and Welfare of Minorities & Development.

Ashok Singhal
