Guwahati: Assam observed Armed Forces Flag Day on Sunday, with governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya attending the state-level programme at Lok Bhavan. A key highlight of the event was the launch of ‘Sainik Tujhe Salaam’, an initiative to honour Armed Forces veterans above the age of 90, as well as Veer Naris and Veer Mothers, through annual home visits by district administrations and zila sainik welfare offices.Observed nationwide, the Armed Forces Flag Day saw tributes being paid to martyrs and the men and women in uniform who have defended the country with courage and dedication.Honouring the spirit of service that defines the Armed Forces, Acharya said that from guarding borders in harsh conditions to leading relief and rescue operations during disasters, the military remains a symbol of courage, discipline and compassion.Reaffirming Assam’s commitment to the welfare of veterans and their families, the governor said, “The state is home to around 41,968 ex-servicemen and 10,361 veer naris. The continuous efforts of the directorate of sainik welfare and the 21 district sainik welfare offices, which work year-round to support the veteran community, are commendable.”He also expressed pride that Assam received special commendation from defence minister Rajnath Singh at the national conference in New Delhi in Sept for its exemplary work in ex-servicemen welfare.
Urging citizens to contribute generously to the Armed Forces Flag Day Fund, the governor said that while no contribution can truly match the sacrifices of soldiers, public support can help ease the hardships faced by the members and their families. He expressed confidence that the state will continue working tirelessly for the welfare of soldiers and their next of kin.
