Dibrugarh: Congress MLA and leader of the opposition in the Assam assembly, Debabrata Saikia, on Friday raised alarm over the severe erosion caused by the Brahmaputra river in the Maijan area of Dibrugarh, while launching a scathing attack on state govt’s handling of multiple critical issues.Addressing a press conference at Rajiv Bhawan in Dibrugarh, Saikia expressed deep concern over the relentless erosion that has been plaguing the area for years.“The Maijan area in Dibrugarh has been shrinking day by day due to massive erosion happening in the area for the last several years. The govt has completely failed to stop the erosion,” Saikia said. The opposition leader also highlighted the recurring problem of waterlogging in Dibrugarh, which has caused immense hardship to residents during the monsoon season.
“Every year, Dibrugarh faces waterlogging and the people have to face huge problems during monsoon, but the govt has failed to solve the issue. The Himanta Biswa Sarma-led BJP govt claims many things, but in reality they don’t do anything,” he added.Beyond the erosion crisis, Saikia raised serious concerns over what he described as deepening political, social, and administrative instability under the present Assam govt.
He accused the ruling dispensation of failures in governance, unfulfilled electoral promises, and adopting divisive and controversial approaches.Highlighting gaps in the administrative structure, Saikia pointed to the large number of vacancies across govt departments, particularly in the health and education sectors. He accused the govt of deliberately delaying recruitment processes, resulting in disruptions in essential public services.Saikia expressed concern over what he described as a visible decline in govt-run health and education systems. He alleged that poor planning, lack of infrastructure development, and stalled recruitment have hindered progress in these crucial sectors, leaving the public to bear the consequences. The Congress leader also criticised what he called the ruling party’s deliberate political attacks and attempts at creating social divisions.
He said remarks made by top leaders have intensified discord among different communities and weakened the state’s social fabric, stressing that harmony and unity must be prioritised over polarisation.Calling for immediate corrective measures, Saikia urged for a cohesive, transparent, and accountable system to restore public trust.“The future direction of Assam depends on the decisions taken today. A united, people-centric approach is essential to bring back stability, harmony, and development,” he said.
