The doctors of Aster Ramesh Hospital in Ongole performed advanced Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) treatment and saved the life of a 27-year-old man from Giddalur in Prakasam district. In a press statement on Tuesday, the doctors claimed it as a first-of-its-kind highly advanced procedure in the region.
After being brought to the hospital in extreme fatigue and an unconscious state, the man suddenly went into cardiac arrest at the emergency ward. He had a rare pulmonary embolism (blood clot in the lungs). With complete paralysis of lung and kidney function, ECMO was administered. After 10 days of ECMO treatment, he recovered from life-threatening condition and has recovered completely.
Hospital Medical Superintendent Dr. M. Vamsikrishna said, “This treatment was earlier available only in big cities. The doctors of various specialties and super specialties worked in coordination and achieved this.” Senior Critical Care physician Dr. M. Vamsikrishna and cardiologist Dr. P.J. also played a key role in the treatment.
