At least 13 people have lost their lives and thousands have been displaced across the northeastern states in the past 24 hours due to landslides, floods, and relentless rainfall.

On Friday, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) had warned that very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall is expected to continue across the region till May 31, as a depression over Bangladesh moves north-northeastward and weakens.

5 Killed In Assam, Over 10,000 Affected

In Assam, five people died in landslides in Kamrup Metropolitan district, including three women in Guwahati’s Bonda area. The state has seen flooding in six districts, with more than 10,000 people affected, according to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA).

Floods and urban waterlogging were reported in Kamrup Metropolitan, Kamrup, Cachar, Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, and Golaghat districts. Relief camps have been opened in some areas, while the National and State Disaster Response Forces are engaged in rescue operations.

A ‘red alert’ has been issued for 18 districts, warning of extremely heavy rainfall and squally winds up to 60 kmph. Special leave was granted to government employees in Kamrup districts, and schools were closed due to severe waterlogging. Flight services at Guwahati airport were also disrupted.

7 Dead In Arunachal After Vehicle Swept Away

In Arunachal Pradesh, a car carrying two families was swept off Bana-Seppa Road by a landslide, plunging into a gorge and killing all seven occupants, including two children and a pregnant woman. Another vehicle narrowly escaped the same fate.

Local residents have long raised concerns about the unsafe road and lack of warning systems. Rescue efforts were hindered by ongoing rain and unstable terrain.

Several Feared Dead After Landslides In Mizoram

In Lawngtlai, Mizoram, five houses and a hotel collapsed in a massive landslide late Friday night. Officials fear multiple fatalities, including several Myanmar nationals believed to be trapped under the debris.

Rescue efforts by local volunteers and state forces are ongoing, though heavy rain and landslides continue to pose risks.

Teen Drowned, Hundreds Displaced In Tripura

In Tripura, a 16-year-old boy drowned while fishing with his father in West Tripura district. Continuous rain has led to the flooding of low-lying areas, forcing over 200 people into relief camps in West Tripura and Khowai districts.

Several low-lying areas are under water due to intermittent rain since Thursday but the situation is under control till now, Revenue Department Secretary Brijesh Pandey told the media.

Landslides Hit North Sikkim

Heavy rains on Saturday triggered landslides in the Theeng and Chungthang areas of North Sikkim, causing damage to several properties and disrupting normal life in the hilly region.

According to the district administration, continuous downpours led to the loosening of soil along slopes, resulting in multiple landslide incidents. Emergency services have been activated, with disaster response teams on standby to tackle any incidents. Officials have been instructed to monitor the situation closely and report emergencies immediately..

Manipur Hit By Waterlogging

Heavy rain has been lashing Manipur for the past two days, leading to waterlogging in several parts of the state capital, Imphal. On Friday, areas like Kakwa, Thangmeiband, and Sagolband in Imphal West district were affected, causing traffic disruptions.

The water levels of several rivers, including the Imphal and Serou rivers that flow through the Imphal Valley, have also risen significantly.
