At least 25 people, including 10 children, have died in flood in Haiti, according to authorities, adding that a search is on for 10 missing people.
Associated Press quoted Mayor Jean Bertrand Subrème as saying that people remained trapped in several homes that collapsed in the port of Petit-Goâve.
He said that 25 people, including 10 children, died when a flooded river burst its banks in southern Haiti.
“I am overwhelmed by the situation," he said, adding that he has requested the government for help.
In videos not verified by AFP, residents could be seen searching for their loved ones. A father was recorded in tears as he removed his daughter’s lifeless body from under a pile of debris.
Meanwhile, hurricane Melissa, which made the most powerful landfall in 90 years, passed over Jamaica’s more rural western parishes on Tuesday, while the capital Kingston was spared the worst of the storm.
Desmond McKenzie, Minister for Local Government and Community Development, said: “We have not had alerts of any deaths so far. So we cannot presume that there are deaths."
According to CNN, out of Jamaica’s around 700 water systems, some 70 were damaged. “I know so many people have said they cannot reach their families in western Jamaica. That’s because of damage to telecoms infrastructure. As you can imagine, a Category 5 hurricane is catastrophic… That is why we’re not getting communication," the spokesperson said.
Later, Jamaica’s information minister Dana Morris Dixon said that the government has issued an “all clear" signal following the passage of Hurricane Melissa.
Cuba suffered “significant damage" after Melissa made landfall on Wednesday as a Category 3 hurricane.
According to PTI, Hurricane Melissa made landfall in eastern Cuba near the city of Chivirico early Wednesday as a Category 3 storm after pummeling Jamaica as one of the strongest Atlantic hurricanes on record, the US National Hurricane Center said.
It is expected to make its way late Thursday near or to the west of Bermuda.
