A floral gown worn by Princess Diana sold for $520,000 at auction, leading the largest sale of her wardrobe, which included over 100 items.

Princess Diana wore the Bellville Sassoon-designed dress on multiple occasions between 1988 and 1992.
A floral gown worn by Princess Diana on several events fetched $520,000 at auction, headlining what has been described as the largest sale of her wardrobe to date. The pastel dress, which Princess Diana reportedly called her “caring dress" for its ability to comfort sick children with its bright, cheerful colors, was among more than 100 personal items auctioned in California.
The Bellville Sassoon-designed dress, worn by Princess Diana on multiple occasions between 1988 and 1992, including state visits to Spain and Nigeria, led the “Princess Diana’s Style & A Royal Collection" event at The Peninsula Beverly Hills. Hosted by Julien’s Auctions, the sale featured iconic pieces from Diana’s formal and casual wardrobe, many of which drew six-figure bids.
Among the top earners were a navy Catherine Walker coat dress and a cream silk evening gown by the same designer, both selling for $455,000. A lambskin Dior handbag gifted to Princess Diana by France’s former First Lady Bernadette Chirac went for $325,000, while a blue Gianni Versace shift dress sold for $227,500.
Some of the items highlighted Princess Diana’s more relaxed style, including a scarlet ski suit and a British Lung Foundation sweatshirt, which brought in $325,000 and $221,000 respectively. A black taffeta gown by Elizabeth Emanuel, who co-designed Princess Diana’s wedding dress, sold for $26,000. Elizabeth Emanuel earlier said she hoped her archival pieces would “be loved and appreciated once again by those who will never forget those golden days when Princess Diana was our Queen of Hearts."
Julien’s previously set the auction record for a Princess Diana ensemble last year, when a Jacques Azagury gown sold for $1.14 million. The auction also featured historical items from the wider royal family, including possessions of Queen Elizabeth II, the Queen Mother, and the Duke and Duchess of Windsor- some dating back to the 19th century.
Julien’s Auctions’ executive director Martin Nolan said, “Princess Diana’s legacy lives on not only through her humanitarian work but also in the timeless elegance of her style, which continues to inspire the world."
