Audi, who entered F1 in the 1990s and have partnered with many manufacturers, has been developing its F1-spec hybrid V6 engine in Germany since 2022.

Audi has unveiled the R26 Concept, a striking preview of what will become the company’s first Formula One car in 2026. The reveal, made exactly 115 days before the brand’s full F1 debut, marks the beginning of Audi’s most ambitious motorsport venture yet.

The R26 Concept isn’t a race-ready machine but rather a visual statement, offering a glimpse into Audi’s forthcoming Formula One identity. The car showcases a sharp, minimalist design defined by clean, geometric surfaces and a distinctive colour palette – carbon black, titanium and Audi’s signature red. The company also confirmed it will begin selectively using red rings in its branding to reflect its new racing chapter.

“This is a clear statement of intent," Audi said, adding that the R26 Concept previews the design and colour scheme of its first official F1 race car. The production version will, of course, feature plenty of sponsor logos once it hits the track.

Audi’s Formula One story is deeply linked to Sauber’s long racing legacy. Founded by Peter Sauber in the 1970s, the team entered F1 in the 1990s and has since partnered with multiple manufacturers, including Ford, BMW and most recently, Alfa Romeo. Now, it will compete under the Four Rings banner following Audi’s complete acquisition of the Sauber Group in early 2025.

To lead the charge, Audi has assembled a high-profile leadership team: former Ferrari team principal Mattia Binotto and ex-Red Bull executive Jonathan Wheatley. Behind the wheel, Brazilian driver Gabriele Bortoleto and F1 veteran Nico Hülkenberg will represent the team starting next year.

Audi has been developing its F1-spec hybrid V6 engine at its Neuburg facility in Germany since 2022. The first units — built to meet the new 2026 F1 regulations — are expected to be delivered to the team soon.

Audi CEO Gernot Döllner remains confident but realistic about the team’s long-term goals. “We are not entering Formula One just to be there," he said. “We want to win. But becoming a top team takes time, perseverance and a constant drive to improve."
