New Delhi: Australian data center operator AirTrunk has announced its intent to invest about ₹3 lakh crore in India as the country sees an insatiable appetite for AI led systems. Backed by global investment giant Blackstone, the company will set up 5GW of data center capacity in India by 2030.

This development comes weeks after AirTrunk acquired India-focused data center operator Lumina CloudInfra, gaining highly valuable, strategic land parcels in India’s top technology hubs in Mumbai and Chennai. The fact that Lumina CloudInfra has also been backed by Blackstone has worked in its favour.

PM Modi has also welcomed the announcement, saying that ‘such investments will strengthen India’s position as a global hub for cloud computing and AI, while generating employment opportunities, supporting local supply chains and accelerating innovation-led growth,’

The Prime Minister also said that it is clear that the future of the world’s digital economy is increasingly being shaped in India.

This highlights a broader trend, with technology companies racing to set up data centers in India, backed by the government. It comes at a time when Google and various tech giants are now setting up data centers in India as AI traffic increases exponentially. Despite concerns about high usage of water and power, the Centre and the states have been actively encouraging such investments, with Vizag in Andhra Pradesh emerging as a hub for data center investments.
