Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli turned on their flawless avatars as India registered a thumping nine-wicket win in the ODI series decider against South Africa in Visakhapatnam on Saturday.

While Yashasvi Jaiswal cracked his maiden ODI century, Rohit (75) and Kohli (67 not out) revelled in equal parts with their half-centuries, unfurling superb sixes during their knocks and former India opener Krishnamachari Srikkanth hailed the star duo’s shot-making.

Srikkanth was particularly effusive in his praise for Kohli’s aggressive strokeplay, lauding a no-look six he hit off pacer Corbin Bosch with sheer nonchalance. Meanwhile, Rohit had kicked on his innings with an advanced slap over mid-wicket for a maximum, lifting pacer Ottneil Baartman over the ropes.

“That six off Bosch, whenever Bosch bowls, it’s like badam halwa for Virat Kohli. He didn’t even look at the ball and it goes for a six. Likewise, Rohit Sharma when facing a short ball from Baartman, smashes him like a boatman. It looked like the ball would go to the boatman on the beaches of Vizag,” Srikkanth said on his YouTube channel.

“Kohli said in the post-match presentation that he was a bit confused the last two years. It shows even a great player and the best of players like him to go through mental trauma. If you see this entire series, he’s enjoying his game. He has gone back to the old Virat Kohli of the past, where he’s very passionate and aggressive but at the same time, very determined. He’s playing at a different level. Actually, he’s playing like a man possessed,” remarked Srikkanth.

Kohli was adjudged the Player of the Series, racking up 302 runs including back-to-back centuries in Ranchi and Raipur. Srikkanth said that the 37-year-old looked in such great touch that he had never seen before in his illustrious career.

“I’ve never seen Virat Kohli batting this well. He’s smashing sixes and fours at will. Yet, all with straight-batted shots. Likewise, Rohit also played smartly, while toying with the field. He played attacking cricket while playing intelligent cricket,” said Srikkanth.
