Muslims in Kerala will celebrate Id-ul-Azha or Bakrid on Saturday, June 7. Unlike other Islamic festivals, animal sacrifice is a prominent component of Bakrid which is celebrated on the 10th day of the Islamic month of Dul Haj. It will also coincide with the culmination of the Haj rites being performed in Makkah.

Major Kazis in the State, including Syed Mohammed Jifri Muthukoya Thangal, K. Alikutty Musliar, Kanthapuram A.P. Aboobacker Musliar, Syed Ibrahim Khaleel Bukhari, Syed Mohammed Koya Jamalullaili Thangal, Syed Nasar Hayy Shihab Thangal, confirmed the Bakrid date on the basis of the lunar month.

Unlike Id-ul-Fitr, which marks the culmination of the month-long Ramzan fasting and is typically celebrated with great fervour and enthusiasm, the festive spirit will relatively be subdued during Bakrid.

The focus of the festival will be more on the spiritual significance and rituals associated with the occasion, serving as a poignant reminder of the trials of Prophet Ibrahim. It will be a festival marking solidarity with the lakhs of pilgrims who gather in Makkah, Saudi Arabia, from around the world to perform Hajj.

Cattle prices saw a significant surge in view of the enhanced demand for buffaloes and oxen in cattle markets ahead of Bakrid. Traders reported a price hike of up to 30% and attributed the increase to the festival-driven demand.

Special Id prayers will be held at Id Gahs and mosques across the State on Saturday morning. While traditional Sunni sections will prefer mosques for Id prayers, Mujahid and Jamat groups will opt for Id Gahs. In case of morning rain, Id prayers will be shifted to their respective mosques as a contingency measure.
