The arena in Miami witnessed one of the most remarkable scoring explosions in modern NBA history on Tuesday night. Bam Adebayo delivered a performance that few expected from the defensive anchor of the Miami Heat.

By the end of the game, the veteran big man had scored 83 points in a 150–129 victory over the Washington Wizards, the second-highest single-game total in league history. That’s not an easy feat.Of course, the numbers stunned fans and analysts across the league, but his teammates inside the Heat locker room viewed the moment through a different lens. Teammate Keshad Johnson, the 24-year-old forward who recently won the 2026 NBA Slam Dunk Contest, spent 19 minutes on the floor that night.

For him, the game felt surreal as he watched Adebayo reach a level few players ever touch.

Keshad Johnson described the night as something he could barely process while it occured. "Tuesday night was crazy. I was out there on the court with Bam Adebayo as he scored 83 points, but it also felt like I was watching a movie. Although I was present in the moment, I was almost having an out-of-body experience with him. I was watching history right before my eyes," Johnson told The Athletic.

Johnson recalled realizing early that the game might become special. Adebayo exploded for 31 points in the opening quarter and reached a career-high 43 by halftime."Once he had 31 points in the first quarter, I knew: Something crazy is going to happen tonight. By halftime, he had his career high (43 points)."Johnson explained that the entire roster rallied around the moment rather than disrupting Adebayo’s rhythm. "I didn’t want to be in his ear too much. I didn’t want to jinx anything. But I was still telling him during the game: ‘Keep going. We’re not done. What’s next?’”

The scoring spree pushed Adebayo into elite historical company. Only Wilt Chamberlain has scored more in a single NBA game, when he reached 100 points in 1962. Adebayo’s total also surpassed the 81-point game recorded by Kobe Bryant, one of the Heat star’s basketball heroes. “He broke LeBron’s team record of 61,” Johnson said. After the game, Adebayo admitted the moment felt unreal. “Wilt, me, then Kobe,” Adebayo said. “It sounds crazy.”His stat line showed how relentless the performance was. Adebayo shot 20 of 43 from the field, hit 36 of 43 free throws and added seven three-pointers.

Keshad Johnson spills beans on Bam Adebayo’s leadership in the Miami Heat

Johnson emphasized that the scoring burst reflects only part of Adebayo’s value to the Heat. According to the young forward, many observers overlook the veteran’s full impact.Johnson also highlighted Adebayo’s leadership style and daily work ethic."As a teammate, he’s what you want as a leader. No matter who it is — a vet or a rookie — Bam holds everybody accountable if they’re slacking. Bam is the guy who will get on anybody, and he will own up to his own mistakes as well. But most importantly, he leads by example. He’s gonna run through the wall first before he tells you to run through it."For Johnson, the 83-point night felt like a reward for years of unseen work."In my opinion, nobody deserves this more than him. I’ve consistently been in one-on-one workouts with Bam. I know how hard he works. I know what he puts into the game. I’ve watched it firsthand. That’s why he’s the leader. That’s why he’s the cap.To see the results, I’m just glad he’s the person who received the blessing."Of course, as Giannis Antetokounmpo said, the result matters, and he will be remembered in history for his astonishing accolade.
