Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Bandi Sanjay Kumar has said the BJP will organise state-wide protests if the Congress government in Telangana fails to withdraw its move to provide 10% reservations to Muslims from within the 42% quota for Backward Classes (BCs).
Speaking to reporters in Sircilla town, Mr. Sanjay alleged that a political conspiracy is being hatched by the people at the helm in the ruling Congress dispensation to undermine the interests of BCs in pursuit of their vote bank, in the name of ordinance.
The BJP will protest the detrimental move inside and outside the Assembly as it would provide only 32% quota for BCs, who constituted 51% of the State population, he said.
“BJP is against religion-based reservations as it is against the Constitution. If the Congress government is committed to the welfare of BCs, it should earmark the 42% for BCs by excluding Muslims from the list of BCs,” he said.
“We will take up the responsibility of getting approval from the Centre if the 42% quota is exclusively earmarked for BCs alone,” Mr. Sanjay added.
He suggested that Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy effectively put forward Telangana’s voice on Banakacherla project during the meeting with Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu to be conducted by the Central Government in New Delhi on Wednesday.
Earlier in the day, the Union Minister distributed bicycles to class 10 students of the government schools in Sircilla.
