In a major step towards expanding legal education infrastructure in Chamarajanagar, the Bar Council of India has granted approval for the establishment of a Government Law College in the district. This comes in response to an appeal from Chamarajanagar MP Sunil Bose.
The approval permits the college to admit 60 students to the three-year LLB degree course beginning from the current academic year.
The State government had earlier given its nod to launch both the three-year LLB and five-year BA LLB courses. A temporary campus was set up on the Silk Cocoon Market premises on Santhemarahalli Road in Chamarajanagar town. The institution is affiliated to the Karnataka State Law University, Hubballi, and the necessary fees were paid to the Bar Council of India seeking its approval.
Highlighting the urgent need for a government law college in the district, the MP had written to the Bar Council in April this year highlighting the hardships faced by local students, who were compelled to travel long distances to pursue legal education, often facing financial and logistical issues, a press release said.
Following the Bar Council’s approval, students from Chamarajanagar will now have access to legal education within their own district.
In a letter dated June 2, the Bar Council of India communicated its decision to the Vice-Chancellor of Karnataka State Law University and the Principal of the Government Law College, granting permission to admit 60 students to the three-year LL.B course for the academic years 2025–26 and 2026–27, the release added.
In the wake of Bar Council’s nod, Mr. Bose announced an allocation of ₹5 lakh from his MPLADS (Member of Parliament Local Area Development Scheme) fund towards the purchase of books for the college library.
