The round of job losses, the biggest at the BBC since 2011, is being set in motion before the former top Google executive Matt Brittin takes over as director general next month.

BBC plans to cut up to 2,000 jobs to save 10% of its annual budget
BBC Layoffs: UK media giant British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) on Wednesday announced that it has planned to axe as many as 2,000 jobs over the next two years as part of efforts to save 500 million pounds ($677 million), or around 10% of its annual budget.
BBC interim Director-General Rhodri Talfan Davies announced the necessary downsizing of the workforce which will affect about 10% of the BBC’s 21,500 employees worldwide. Staff were told of the news of redundancies during an all-staff call on Wednesday afternoon.
The round of job losses, the biggest at the BBC since 2011, is being set in motion before the former top Google executive Matt Brittin takes over as director general next month.
In an email, Davies acknowledged the impact of the move. “I know this creates real uncertainty, but we wanted to be open about the challenge," he said.
He said that the cuts were being driven by inflation, pressure on licence fee income, weaker commercial revenues and broader global economic turbulence.
Davies added that, in the short term, the broadcaster would introduce “additional group‑wide cost controls" with immediate effect in an attempt to improve its financial situation.
“A lot of good practice is already in place," Talfan Davies said. “But we need to go further and introduce tighter controls on recruitment and travel; cut spending on management consultancies; and reduce expenditure on attendance at conferences, awards, and events."
He added that BBC divisions were now looking at “how they can reduce areas of duplication" and “what activity they might be able to stop". Spending plans for each division in the 2027-28 financial year will be shared with staff in September.
“In parallel, we’re also looking at our ways of working across the organisation to identify areas where we can reduce costs together – by harnessing new technology and developing more consistent or simpler processes," he said.
The BBC said in February that it would look to cut costs by about 10% over the next three years. The BBC needs to save an additional £500 million ($678 million) from total annual operating costs of £5 billion over the next two years, with the bulk of the new savings required in 2027 and 2028, according to the memo.
The BBC is primarily funded by UK households paying a flat annual license fee, sometimes critically described as a tax. That model is laid out in a Royal Charter, a document issued by the monarch that cements the BBC’s mission to serve the public interest and which is due to expire in 2027.
