GUWAHATI: Dr Bhubaneswar Borooah Cancer Institute (BBCI) in Guwahati celebrated the 132nd birth anniversary of Lokabandhu Dr Bhubaneswar Borooah with a heartfelt commemorative event on Thursday.
Dr Borooah, an eminent physician, freedom fighter, educationist, and philanthropist, is celebrated for his pioneering contributions to modern healthcare and social reform in Assam. Known as Lokabandhu, or "Friend of the People," his dedication to societal welfare continues to inspire many.The event began with a floral tribute at Dr Borooah's statue, led by the director, senior faculty, staff, and students of BBCI.
A public meeting followed, attended by doctors, nurses, students, staff, and community members.Dr Bibhuti B. Borthakur, director of BBCI, welcomed attendees and emphasised the lasting relevance of Dr Borooah’s vision in today’s healthcare landscape. He reaffirmed BBCI’s dedication to the ideals of service, empathy, and excellence that Dr Borooah championed, noting that the Institute’s mission against cancer is deeply rooted in his legacy.
Dignitaries, including Dr Abani Kr. Bhagawati, former professor of Gauhati University, as chief guest, Dr MS Lakshmi Priya, Guwahati Municipal Corporation commissioner, as guest of honour, and Prof. Dr Surajit Borooah, member, managing committee and president, erstwhile Board of Trustees BBCI, highlighted Dr Borooah’s diverse contributions. They stressed the importance of integrating his principles into current public health efforts, especially in combating the rising burden of cancer and other non-communicable diseases in Assam and the Northeast.The event concluded with a collective pledge to uphold Lokabandhu’s legacy, inspiring future generations to embrace compassion, service, and community commitment.
