Belagavi Police have solved the case of an attempted robbery at a jewellery shop in Athani with the arrest of a Maharashtra-based gang.
Investigators confiscated two country-made pistols from the gang members. The offence was committed on August 26.
Vijaya Javeera of Ichalkaranji in Kolhapur district and Yashwant Gurava of Jarandi in Sangli district are the arrested gang members.
Two pistols, seven live bullets, a car and a mobile phone used in the crime have been recovered.
Superintendent of Police Bheemashankar S. Guled told reporters in Belagavi on Thursday that preliminary investigation revealed that the country-made weapons were procured from Madhya Pradesh.
Further investigation is on.
“In this case, Hanamant Wandere of Savalja in Sangli district, Aswad Bharat Katakar of Sangli district and Suraj Budawale of Posegaon-Visapur in Satara district are absconding. We are trying to trace them,” Dr. Guled said.
“We collected a few clues other than CCTV footage. The accused were wearing helmets and masks. But our officers conducted an efficient inquiry and arrested two of them. There are 11 cases against the main accused Vijay, including murder, dacoity and extortion. There are various cases against the rest,” the Superintendent of Police said.
He congratulated the team of officers who apprehended the two accused.
Another gang arrested
Meanwhile, another gang of chain snatchers from Maharashtra that was operating in Belagavi was also arrested.
Pradeep Naik, Rajendra Naik and Ankush Lohar of Linganur village in Miraj taluk of Sangli district of Maharashtra are the arrested accused.
The police recovered two two-wheelers and 60 grams of gold ornaments worth ₹6 lakh from them.
Complainant Gauravva Kalashetty was going to his farm from Halalli bus stand via Telasanga Road. At that time, two thieves who came on a bike stole the mangalsutra and gold chain from the woman’s neck and fled. A case was registered in Aigali Police Station. The accused were arrested after 15 days of intensive investigation.
The accused have confessed to have been involved in nine theft cases, including four registered in Aigali Police Station, two in Athani Police Station, one each in Raibagh, Kudachi and Miraj Rural police stations in Maharashtra.
