Belagavi police fire on accused in self defence during arrest attempt

BELAGAVI: The Kittur police fired at the leg of the accused when he tried to attack the police personnel. The incident occurred in the early hours of Saturday. When the police were securing the accused, Ramesh Kilari, he suddenly stabbed Inspector Sharif Dafedar with a knife.

In self-defence, PSI Praveen fired at the accused. The injured were shifted to BIMS Hospital. The accused was wanted by the police in four dacoities, one robbery, one gang rape, one arms case, and three other cases.An accused wanted for cases like rape, gang rape, and dacoity was arrested by being shot in the leg in Kittur on Saturday morning. Ramesh Kilari was the accused who allegedly attacked the police team that was to apprehend him with a knife on the outskirts of Kittur town at around 6 am.

Constable Sharif Dafedar and another police officer were injured in the attack. Despite police warnings to surrender, Kilari continued the attack.

The police, after warning, fired one round in the air and later shot him in the leg, arresting him.According to Kittur PSI Praveen, who led the team, on specific information, the police team raided the place where the accused was hiding. Despite continuing to brandish the knife after attacking two constables, the police shot him in the leg.

He added that there was no option but to protect the police team from the accused's attack.Both the constables and accused Kilari were admitted to BIMS Hospital in Belagavi. Kilari was said to be wanted in four dacoity cases, one money-snatching case, one gang rape case, and three other cases.Superintendent of Police Dr Bhimashankar Guled said that when the Kittur police tried to arrest the accused Ramesh Kilari, he attacked Police Constable Sharif Dafedar with a sword and injured him. After this, the police personnel fired one round in the air as a warning. However, when the accused tried to attack another police officer, PSI Praveen fired in self-defence, hitting the accused in the leg. The injured Constable Sharif Dafedar and the accused Ramesh Kilari were immediately admitted to the Belagavi Institute of Medical Sciences for treatment.Four cases of dacoity, one robbery, one gang rape, and three other cases, including illegal arms, were registered against the accused Ramesh, and a total of five non-bailable warrants were issued against him, informed SP Dr Guled.
