‘Bend It Like Beckham’ is one of the biggest cult classics. In recent news, the director of the film, Gurinder Chadha, shared her thoughts about how a sequel may be on the way and shared her excitement to “revisit” the film franchise.
‘Bend It Like Beckham’ 2 on the cards
The 2002 film starring Parminder Nagra and Keira Knightley may just be getting its long awaited sequel. In an interview with Deadline, Chadha revealed that a new film is already in the works and shared, "I’m excited to revisit the original characters and revive the enduring story and build on the legacy we helped to create for the women’s game."She even shared that the original cast members of the film, including Archie Panjabi, Juliet Stevenson, Parminder Nagra, Keira Knightley and many others all know about the film already.
She added that she has high hopes that the old cast members will return for the sequel.“Everything hinges on the script and if the original cast likes it. I am working really hard to make sure every character I bring back has a decent arc and scenes”, she added.
How did the sequel happen?
Chadha also revealed that after the release of the first film, there were no plans for a remake. She shared that she had lost hope and was not ready to make a film for the past 23 years.
The two, however, decided to meet up after she shared her screenplay. “I didn’t want to do anything because I didn’t have a story. And then I came up with a great story, really super-cool story. So now I’m inspired. Literally came up with it just about a month ago”, she shared.Chadha is even looking forward to bringing in Paul Berges for the sequel as well, sharing that she has been discussing a script with him. She said to the portal, “I’m hoping to write it with Paul, who has come up with some very funny lines like he did last time”.Berges was also a director on the first film.
