A woman from West Bengal who works as a domestic help in Bengaluru has alleged that she and her husband were assaulted by police who accused her of stealing a diamond ring.

Sundari Bibi approached the Karnataka State Human Rights Commission to file a complaint. She alleged seven police personnel assaulted her and her husband, who works as a garbage collector with the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), inside Varthur Police Station on October 30.

Taking cognisance of the issue, Karnataka Home Minister G Parameshwara has asked Bengaluru police commissioner Seemanth Kumar Singh to submit a report.

Parameshwara said he will take action against police personnel if the allegations are found to be true.

What Complainant Said?

Sundari said her employer has accused her of theft after she found a Rs 100 note at the balcony of his house. She said that before she could give Rs 100 note to her employer, the owner saw the CCTV footage and accused me of theft. She said the owner also accused her of stealing a diamond ring.

Sundari was taken to the police station, and her husband was also summoned. She said both of them were brutally assaulted by cops before a social worker came for their help.

After the alleged assault, she claimed to have developed fever and body ache. Her husband also approached the West Bengal Migrant Department.

Sundari has requested the State Human Rights Commission to ensure she is not harassed and is allowed to continue her jobs across households and live safely in Bengaluru.
