A junior female doctor at Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay Medical College and Hospital in West Bengal’s Howrah district was allegedly threatened with rape and assaulted by a traffic home guard and his neighbour.
Police arrested the two men on Tuesday.
According to officials, the incident occurred during an argument between the duo and the doctor while she was examining a pregnant woman at the Uluberia hospital. The accused allegedly twisted her hand, slapped her, and issued rape threats.
“The incident took place after a pregnant woman from Kharia Maynapur was admitted to the hospital on Monday afternoon. During a routine check-up in the evening, the junior doctor was unable to perform a full physical examination due to the patient’s medical complications," an officer said.
The trainee doctor said that while she was examining the patient, the woman resisted treatment and kicked her. Later, the patient’s relatives allegedly said, “The patient hurt you, but you haven’t died, right? So check again."
She said she replied that the patient was under treatment and would recover, but the relatives allegedly threatened her, saying they would “insert a rod" in her body.
According to the doctor, one of the men also claimed to be a senior police officer and an influential political leader before threatening her further.
Police said the situation escalated after the patient’s family questioned the doctor about the woman’s condition.
“An argument ensued, during which the doctor was allegedly slapped, her arm twisted, and subjected to verbal abuse. The accused also allegedly issued rape threats and warned her of consequences if she left the hospital premises. We have arrested both men and are investigating the matter," the officer added.
The ward master immediately alerted the hospital police outpost, and officers rushed to the scene. The assaulted doctor was later taken to Uluberia police station, where she filed a formal complaint. Acting on it, police detained the traffic home guard and his neighbour, who were subsequently arrested.
