‘Bengaluru Better Than Delhi’: Supreme Court Judge’s Remark On Air Pollution

A woman from Uttar Pradesh and a man from West Bengal reconciled and married, leading the Supreme Court to quash dowry and false promise charges.

In an unusual scene in the Supreme Court on Tuesday, a woman, who had earlier filed a complaint alleging false promise to marry and dowry demands against a man, informed the top court that she had married him and was living happily, prompting the court to quash criminal proceedings against the latter.

While hearing the matter, a bench of Justice BV Nagarathna interacted with the couple during proceedings. On learning that they had tied the knot, she remarked that one should not rush to the police station to make such complaints.

“Where are they from? This is why you should not rush to the police station to make such complaints," she said as quoted by Bar&Bench.

Counsel appearing for the woman told the court that the complaint was filed “out of confusion," and that the couple had since reconciled.

“Now they are happy. She is from Uttar Pradesh, and the boy is from West Bengal but working in Bengaluru," the advocate said.

Reacting with humour, Justice Nagarathna quipped, “There is a movie 2 States. That was Punjab and Tamil Nadu. This one is my brother’s state," referring to Justice R Mahadevan.

Turning to the woman, Justice Nagarathna asked, “You are happy?" to which the she replied that she was now “trying to get a job in Bengaluru."

Justice Nagarathna responded, “Yes, better than Delhi—no pollution!"

The bench also sought confirmation that the marriage had taken place voluntarily. “Petitioner is not threatened to get married, right?" the judge asked.

“No, no. No threaten. We wanted to marry, and families had some misunderstanding," the man replied.

Finding that the dispute had been amicably resolved, the Supreme Court quashed the FIR and all related charges, including those against the man’s family members.

“The appeal is allowed and disposed of. FIR and all related charges stand quashed. All the best to you both. Please do not rush to the police hereinafter," Justice Nagarathna said, concluding the hearing.
