Bengaluru: Elderly Couple Found Hanging At Old-Age Home

An elderly couple were found dead in their room at an old-age home in Bengaluru more than a month after their son moved them into the facility.

The were found hanging by an attendant on Tuesday morning. The incident took place at the Kamalamma Ramakrishnappa old-age home in Talaghattapura area in the city.

The deceased were identified as R Krishnamurthy, aged 81, and his wife K Radha, aged 74, originally from Madurai in Tamil Nadu. The couple had been living with their son, K Vijay, a tech company director, and his wife at an apartment in Doddakallasandra before being moved to the old-age home on 18 May this year.

According to the police, the couple were discovered dead in their room when an attendant went to serve them tea. After repeated knocks went unanswered, the staff member looked through the ventilator and raised an alarm, Indian Express reported.

Old-age home staff informed the Talaghattapura police, who arrived at the scene and broke open the door. No suicide note or message was found at the scene or on their mobile phones, police added.

In a statement to the police, the couple’s son, Vijay, told that his parents had differences with him and also complained about the food prepared by his wife. He said they had earlier stayed at an old-age home in Byatarayanapura in 2021, but returned home in 2023. However, the issues reportedly continued, which led to their recent move to the Talaghattapura facility.

Vijay told the police that on the night of 23 June, his parents had a heated argument over watching television. He said they had dinner together afterward and went to bed. The next morning, they were found unresponsive.

Meanwhile, the police have filed an unnatural death report and confirmed that a case has been registered. Further investigation is underway to determine the exact cause of the couple’s deaths.
