In a chilling incident, a 40-year-old former software engineer allegedly killed his wife near Basaveshwara Nagar in Bengaluru before walking into a police station to surrender on Tuesday evening.

The Magadi Road Police have registered the case under Section 103 (Murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, following the cold-blooded attack that took place between 6:30 pm and 7:00 pm.

The victim, identified as 39-year-old Bhuvaneshwari, was an Assistant Manager at the Union Bank of India’s Basaveshwara Nagar branch. She had been living in Rajajinagar with the couple’s two children. Her husband, the accused Balamurugan, was previously employed as a software engineer at CapGemini in Whitefield.

Although the couple had been married for 14 years since 2011, they had been living separately for the past one-and-a-half years due to deep-seated misunderstandings. Police sources said Balamurugan harboured suspicions about his wife’s character, accusing her of having an affair, which led to a breakdown in their relationship.

The situation escalated further in recent months after Bhuvaneshwari sought a legal separation, a move Balamurugan strongly opposed. Six months ago, she transferred from a Whitefield bank branch to Basaveshwara Nagar, deliberately keeping her new residence a secret from her husband. However, Balamurugan managed to track her down and moved to Cholurpalya within the KP Agrahara limits four months ago to stay close to her.

Police believe the final trigger for the violence was a formal divorce notice that Balamurugan received just a week before the shooting.

Driven by resentment, Balamurugan waited for Bhuvaneshwari on Tuesday evening as she was walking home from work. As she approached, he intercepted her and fired multiple rounds using a pistol. Eyewitnesses and locals rushed Bhuvaneshwari to Shanbagh Hospital, but she was declared dead due to fatal bullet injuries.

After the shooting, Balamurugan walked straight into the Magadi Road Police Station, where he confessed to the crime and surrendered. He remains in custody as police continue to investigate the source of the illegal firearm used in the murder.
