A sea of Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) fans gathered outside the M Chinnaswamy Stadium on Thursday, eager to witness the team’s IPL victory celebration. However, the celebration turned tragic after a stampede claimed 11 lives and left several others injured.

A special felicitation ceremony for all RCB players was organised by the Karnataka State Cricket Association at the stadium today.

The excitement reached a fever pitch as several men were seen climbing on the stadium’s walls and fences in a desperate bid to enter. Despite tight security arrangements, the overwhelming crowd made it difficult to control the situation.

A car was damaged after fans climbed on it outside the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru to catch a glimpse of their champion team.

Inside the stadium, the atmosphere was electric as players were felicitated amid cheers and chants of “RCB, RCB." Fans draped in team jerseys and waving flags had lined up hours in advance, turning the event into a massive city-wide celebration.

The RCB victory parade and felicitation marked a historic moment for the franchise and its loyal supporters, who have waited long for such glory.

To manage the growing crowd, the Karnataka police resorted to mild force outside the stadium. Despite their efforts, the situation quickly spiralled out of control due to the overwhelming number of attendees.

A large number of RCB supporters had arrived at the stadium hours in advance, hoping to catch a glimpse of their champion team. Many fans were seen climbing walls and fences in desperation as entry points became jam-packed.

One fan outside the stadium described the chaos: “Inside, the seats are all full and that’s why they are not letting us go in. We want to go back but are not allowed. The gates are crowded with people — even if they open them, people will rush in. A lot of people have been injured…"

Reacting to the tragedy, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah expressed deep sorrow in a post on X, formerly Twitter.

“It is with great shock that we heard the news that several people lost their lives and others were seriously injured in a stampede during the RCB team’s victory celebrations… The pain of this tragedy has even erased the joy of victory," he said

The Chief Minister revealed that authorities had already decided against allowing a full-fledged victory parade due to safety concerns, but the crowd that gathered near the stadium led to an unforeseen and tragic stampede.
