Bengaluru’s already gridlocked roads are about to get significantly worse. Starting May 24, two major stretches near Shivajinagar have been completely shut to all vehicles for the next 60 days, as the BBMP undertakes a large-scale culvert replacement project on Kamaraj Road near Nala Cross. Motorists who ignore the restrictions face fines — and guaranteed gridlock.
The closure is necessary to demolish an old stone culvert and construct a new RCC culvert in its place. The order has been issued by Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic), East Division, Sahil Bagla, IPS, who has urged commuters to cooperate with traffic personnel and plan their routes accordingly.
Which Roads Are Completely Blocked?
Two stretches are under total closure. First, Kamaraj Road from Vithoba Temple to Nala Road — no vehicles of any kind are permitted. Second, the stretch on Kamaraj Road from the KR Road–Cubbon Road Junction toward Dickenson Junction is also sealed off entirely.
What Are The Alternate Routes?
Police have mapped out three detours for commuters heading toward Pulakeshinagar and Banaswadi.
Coming from Commercial Street: Take a right turn near Vithoba Temple on Kamaraj Road, proceed via Veerapillai Street, take a left near Nagamma Temple and continue via St John’s Road.
Coming from Cubbon Road: Turn right at the KR Road–Cubbon Road Junction, proceed along Cubbon Road, take a left at Manipal Junction onto Dickenson Road, continue straight to Bluestone, then turn right onto St John’s Road.
Coming from Dispensary Road (Alice Junction): Proceed straight along Dickenson Road, take a left at Bluestone and continue via St John’s Road toward Pulakeshinagar and Banaswadi.
What Happens If You Use The Closed Roads?
A fine. No exceptions. Traffic police will be deployed at diversion points, and violators entering the closed stretches will be penalised on the spot.
How Long Will This Last?
Sixty days from May 24 — which takes the disruption well into late July. Commuters who use Kamaraj Road, Cubbon Road junction approaches or Dickenson Road as part of their daily routes should recalibrate immediately.
Police have specifically requested that residents alert friends and family who travel through these roads daily. Share this — it will save someone an unnecessary detour, a fine, or a very long morning.
