Napoli superstar Kevin De Bruyne underwent successful surgery on a hamstring injury on Wednesday, following the injury the Belgian midfielder sustained during their 3-1 win over Inter Milan.
De Bruyne suffered the injury while netting the opener from the spot against Inter as the midfield maestro had to be helped off the pitch while clutching the back of his right thigh.
“As scheduled, Kevin De Bruyne underwent surgery today in Antwerp following a high-grade injury to the biceps femoris of his right thigh," the club said in their statement.
“The surgery was perfectly successful. De Bruyne, assisted during the operation by the head of the Italian medical staff, Dr. Raffaele Canonico, will continue the first post-surgical phase of his rehabilitation process in Belgium," the club added.
Napoli has not specified when the 34-year-old will return. De Bruyne has a history of hamstring issues and underwent surgery in 2023 while at Manchester City. His injury has exacerbated Napoli’s growing fitness crisis, with Romelu Lukaku still recovering from a thigh problem sustained in August. Serie A leaders Napoli will host seventh-placed Como on Saturday.
De Bruyne has been one of Napoli’s star performers this campaign, netting four goals and setting up two in 11 outings, helping the Partenopei to the top of the table. Napoli are level on points with AS Roma but ahead on goal difference.
De Bruyne joined the side from the South of Italy after a trophy-laden stint with Premier League giants Manchester City, with whom the playmaker clinched 19 titles, in the summer and his time at Naples has been rather eventful with the fabled club in the quest of defending their title. However, with some of their key players sidelined, Napoli boss Conte may need to explore the January transfer market for additions to his unit.
