In what has come as good news for athletics enthusiasts across India, the Neeraj Chopra Classic has been rescheduled to Saturday, July 5, after the earlier date had to be cancelled due to the cross-border tensions between India and Pakistan last month, which delayed the Indian Premier League as well.

JSW Sports, the organisers of the event, announced the new date on Tuesday.

The NC Classic is the first edition of the tournament, approved by World Athletics, and will see some of the biggest names from the world of javelin take part in the event in Bengaluru.

“Bringing the Neeraj Chopra Classic back this quickly has taken an enormous collective effort and we’re happy to confirm its return on July 5. Our teams have worked tirelessly and the unwavering support from the Athletics Federation of India, the Karnataka Olympic Association, the Government of Karnataka and our partners made this possible," Karan Yadav, chief commercial officer of JSW Sports, said.

“The energy around this event is bigger than ever and we’re set to deliver a celebration of javelin that’s bolder, better and even more unforgettable," Karan added in his statement.

The upcoming event will see a brilliant lineup, including Grenada’s two-time world champion Anderson Peters, Germany’s 2016 Olympic gold medallist Thomas Rohler and Kenya’s Julius Yego.

Besides them, American Curtis Thompson (PB: 87.76m), Asian Games bronze medallist Genki Dean (PB: 84.28m) of Japan, Rumesh Pathirage (PB: 85.45m) of Sri Lanka, and Luiz Mauricio da Silva (PB: 86.34m) of Brazil will also take part.

India’s first-ever international javelin throw competition, which was scheduled for May 24, is being organised by double Olympic-medallist Neeraj in collaboration with JSW Sports and sanctioned by the Athletics Federation of India.

The star-studded 12-man event, to be held at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium, will feature seven of the best javelin throwers in the world and five Indians, including Neeraj.

The other four Indians are Asian championships silver-medallist Sachin Yadav, Kishore Jena, Rohit Yadav and Sahil Silwal.

The event, which was granted category A status by World Athletics, was shifted to the Kanteerava Stadium in Bengaluru from the original venue of Panchkula because of inadequate lighting for live telecast.
