Bihar Cop Asks Driver’s Caste, Assaults Him, Then Makes Him Lick Spit

A police officer in Bihar’s Sheikhpura district has been suspended after allegedly humiliating an e-rickshaw driver by making him lick his spit after asking his caste, said officials.

The incident took place on Tuesday in Mehus village when Praduman Kumar, the driver, was stopped at a junction after dropping off passengers.

According to Kumar, Praveen Chandra Diwakar — the in-charge of Mehus police station—confronted him while in plain clothes, verbally abused him, and later asked him his caste.

When Kumar replied, “Brahmin," Diwakar allegedly responded, “I don’t even like to see people of the Brahmin caste," reported NDTV.

The cop then spat on the ground and forced the driver to lick it.

Kumar further alleged that he was beaten with a lathi nearly 50 to 60 times before being taken to the police station, where the assault continued. He is currently undergoing treatment at Sheikhpura Sadar Hospital.

“I work hard for my family every day. I can never forget what happened to me. I was beaten up just after asking my caste, made to lick spit. Is this humanity?" Kumar said.

The incident came to light after Kumar informed local MLA Sudarshan Kumar, who has demanded a fair and immediate investigation. Residents also called for a case to be registered against the officer.

Superintendent of Police Baliram Chaudhary confirmed the officer’s suspension, stating, “We have suspended the police officer after the allegations were found to be true in the investigation."

Meanwhile, Diwakar has denied the allegations, claiming they are “baseless" and alleging the driver was “teasing girls."
