The Station House Officer (SHO) of Barsoi police station, Ram Chandra Mandal, has been suspended after a CCTV video allegedly showing him arguing with a brother and sister at a local restaurant went viral. The suspension was ordered following an official inquiry into the incident.

Katihar Superintendent of Police (SP) Shikhar Chaudhary confirmed the suspension and ordered a further investigation. The suspension order, dated October 28, was shared via a press release on the Katihar police’s official X account.

The incident took place on October 24 at BR-11 Restaurant in Barsoi, Katihar district. According to officials, Mandal had arrived at the restaurant as part of a routine election check after receiving information about the possible presence of anti-social elements, with the state gearing up for next month’s Assembly elections.

The viral CCTV footage, which lasts over four minutes, shows Mandal entering the restaurant with a male officer and three female constables. He approaches a man and a woman seated together and questions the man aggressively about the woman’s presence.

Despite the man explaining calmly that she was his sister, the SHO allegedly raised his voice and repeatedly told him to “watch his tone and temper." The confrontation escalated, with other diners visibly uncomfortable, until a bystander stepped in to diffuse the situation.

“The Barsai police station in-charge is seen arguing with some individuals sitting at the BR-11 restaurant located at Barsai Ras Chowk. The investigation of this matter was conducted by the Deputy Superintendent of Police (Headquarters), Katihar," the Katihar police said in a statement.

“During the investigation, it was found that the Barsói police station in-charge was using abusive language with individuals seated in the restaurant. This reflects their negligence of duty and arbitrary behavior, and it is also tarnishing the image of the police," it added.

The police have assured that the matter is being investigated thoroughly, and additional action will follow based on the inquiry’s findings.
