Guwahati: Expelled notorious member of Bir Lachit Sena, Vikas Asom, who had been absconding for weeks, surrendered before Dispur police on Saturday afternoon. Asom, who was at the helm of the recent controversy, is allegedly involved in extortion and intimidation activities, is currently in custody.Dispur PS OC Bhaskar Malla Patowary said Asom has been booked under the relevant provisions of BNS. “The accused has been charged under Sections 140(2) and 3(5) of the BNS Act, which relate to kidnapping or abduction for ransom or coercion and acting with a common intention,” the OC added.The officer said Asom would be produced before the Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) court, Kamrup (Metro), on Sunday.This development comes after the Assam police arrested members of the Bir Lachit Sena for allegedly kidnapping a businessman and demanding a ransom of Rs 20 lakh for his release.
Even the organisation’s state general secretary, Rantu Paniphukan, was not spared, as he was arrested during a press conference in which he alleged that one of the arrested members had close ties with several members of the ruling party.Moments before his surrender, Asom again took to his social media account, urging people to watch the late Zubeen Garg’s latest film Roi Roi Binale, describing it as a ‘beautiful piece of cinema.’ He also apologsied to the public for his actions and affirmed that he would cooperate with the police and respect the court’s verdict and sentence.
