Union Minister for Commerce and Industry, Piyush Goyal, on Sunday, read out a resolution congratulating Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his leadership in implementing the GST 2.0 reforms.
Piyush Goyal read the resolution during ‘Sansad Karyashala, the BJP’s workshop, organized for party MPs on Sunday. The resolution underscored Modi’s pivotal role in overhauling India’s tax structure, describing the GST reform as a “milestone in India’s economic history."
It noted that prior to 2017, India’s taxation system was a complex network of multiple levies—including VAT and various state-level taxes—which created bottlenecks such as long queues at interstate toll booths, bureaucratic delays, and a lack of transparency. This fragmented structure hindered business growth and modernisation.
Recognizing the need for change, the Modi government introduced the GST with a bold vision — “One Nation, One Tax". The aim was simple: unify India’s market, create ease of doing business, and empower citizens by simplifying tax compliance, the resolution said.
According to the resolution, the impact over the past eight years has been transformative. The taxpayer base has more than doubled—from 66 lakh in 2017 to over 1.5 crore in 2025. Annual GST collections crossed Rs 22 lakh crore in FY 2024–25, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 18%. Monthly GST revenues now consistently hover around Rs 2 lakh crore, reflecting increased compliance and a buoyant economy.
Beyond the numbers, the resolution emphasized that reforms have eased the tax burden on essential items like food, medicines, and electronics. Small businesses, exporters, and startups have especially benefited from simplified procedures, enabling them to focus on growth instead of paperwork, the resolution also mentioned.
The government’s broader aim, as outlined in the resolution, is to make life easier for citizens, empower traders, and accelerate India’s journey toward self-reliance (Aatmanirbhar Bharat).
