Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Jagat Prakash Nadda on Thursday (August 7, 2025) condemned the attack on the Leader of the Opposition in West Bengal Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, at Cooch Behar on August 5.
Mr. Nadda also spoke to Adhikari and took stock of the situation. ‘If the Leader of the Opposition in West Bengal isn’t safe, one can only imagine the plight of the common people. Mamata Banerjee must be held accountable for fostering this culture of lawlessness and political violence,” Mr. Nadda said on X.
The BJP president alleged that Mr. Adhikari’s convoy was attacked “in Cooch Behar by TMC goons.”
“What’s even more alarming is that this brazen assault took place in the presence of state police, a telling reflection of the complete breakdown of law and order under Mamata Banerjee’s government. This wasn’t just an attack on an elected representative; it was an attack on democracy itself,” Mr. Nadda said.
Police did nothing
Several vehicles, including the one in which the LOP was travelling, were allegedly attacked with stones at Khagrabari in the Cooch Behar district on August 5. The windshields and rear glass panes of some vehicles were shattered. Mr. Adhikari said the attack was an attempt to kill him and blamed TMC leader Udayan Guha for the attack.
During the day, Mr. Adhikari urged West Bengal Civil Service (WBCS) officers, “not to be swayed by Mamata Banerjee’s crocodile tears.”
“Her refusal to register ECI-directed FIRs is not to protect WB Govt employees, but rather an attempt to shield I-PAC and its associates, who have infiltrated our electoral system as data entry operators.... For the sake of West Bengal’s future, it’s time the WBCS officers performed their Constitutional duties,” Mr. Adhikari said.
On August 5 the ECI had sent a letter to the West Bengal Chief Secretary directing the suspension of four officials attached to the Chief Electoral Officer of the State. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said that she would not let ECI suspend any government officials.
