Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to officially blow BJP’s poll bugle for the upcoming Bihar elections with a visit to the state in the next few days. However, significant preparations are already underway to ready the BJP for the crucial elections later this year.
The party has conducted surveys across all constituencies up for election this year. The primary criterion for ticket allocation will be the candidate’s ability to win. Regardless of a leader’s seniority, if the survey indicates they are not likely to secure a victory, they will not receive a ticket.
Regarding seat-sharing within the NDA, discussions will occur later. It is expected that the BJP and JDU will contest almost an equal number of seats, while alliance partners such as the parties led by Chirag Paswan, Jitendra Ram Manjhi, and Upendra Kushwaha will receive the remaining seats.
At the grassroots level, meetings are being held to assess the party’s strengths and weaknesses in each constituency. This strategy is being implemented well in advance while elections are still a few months away.
Another significant strategy involves reaching out to Biharis residing in other parts of the country or the world, who may have moved for work or family reasons. The BJP has identified such individuals and aims to connect with them, emphasising the importance of having a cohesive government at both state and central levels, and encouraging them to return and vote.
The BJP is also monitoring the opposition’s strategies and candidate selections. Despite a favourable outlook for the NDA in Bihar, the election remains challenging. The BJP has declared that the campaign will be led in the name of Prime Minister Modi, with Chief Minister Nitish Kumar as the face of the campaign. However, the decision on who will ultimately become the chief minister will be made by the alliance after the results are announced.
Winning Bihar is crucial, especially following India’s strong stance against Pakistan, and it will serve as a testament to Prime Minister Modi’s enduring popularity.
The past five years in Bihar have been tumultuous, with alliances shifting frequently. Currently, the JDU has committed to remaining with the BJP and has no plans to switch sides again.
On May 29, Prime Minister Modi will visit Bihar to inaugurate the new terminal building at Patna Airport. The following day, he will lay the foundation stone and dedicate various development projects worth over Rs 48,520 crore in Karakat, Bihar. He will also address a public gathering during his visit.
